Yán Wán Zǐ (Begonia henryi Tuber) is a traditional Chinese medicinal material. It is the tuber of Begonia henryi Hemsl., a plant belonging to the genus Begonia of the family Begoniaceae. It grows in damp, shady mountain rock crevices. It is recorded in Quanguo Zhongcaoyao Huibian (Compilation of National Chinese Herbal Medicines).
Efficacy & Actions
Activates blood circulation, reduces swelling, stops bleeding, detoxifies, and promotes diuresis.
Indications
Traumatic injuries, fractures, joint swelling and pain, hemoptysis and hematuria, metrorrhagia and leukorrhea (gynecological bleeding and abnormal vaginal discharge), strangury disorder, and rabies bites.
Usage & Dosage
For oral administration: decoct in water, 9–15 g (or 3–5 qian, a traditional Chinese unit of weight). For topical application: take an appropriate amount of fresh herb, mash it, and apply it to the affected area.
Selected Formulas
For traumatic injuries (empirical formula) Take 10g each of Yan Wan Zi (a local herb), Huzhang (Polygonum cuspidatum), and Hantiancao (a local herb), plus 20g each of Chaipi Zhang (a local herb) and Guanyin Zuolian (a local herb). Decoct in water and drink. For rabies bites (empirical formula) Take 15g each of Yan Wan Zi and Jiadiao Teng (a local herb). Decoct in water and drink.
