White Radish & Honey Water

White Radish & Honey Water is a classic folk remedy for moistening the lungs and relieving cough. White radish is pungent and sweet in taste, cool in nature (becoming more neutral when cooked), entering the Lung and Stomach meridians, known for descending qi, aiding digestion, resolving phlegm, moistening the lungs, detoxifying, and generating fluids. Honey is sweet in taste, neutral in nature, entering the Lung, Spleen, and Large Intestine meridians, known for tonifying the middle, moistening dryness, relieving pain, and detoxifying. Together, white radish descends qi and resolves phlegm, while honey moistens the lungs and relieves cough. The drink achieves the effects of moistening the lungs, relieving cough, resolving phlegm, descending qi, generating fluids, moistening dryness, aiding digestion, and promoting bowel movements. The liquid is sweet with a subtle pungency, carrying the fresh aroma of white radish and the smooth sweetness of honey. It is especially suitable for dry autumn and winter seasons or for those with lung dryness, dry cough, dry throat, and thick phlegm.

Main Ingredients

Steps

  1. Wash 200-300g of white radish, peel (if organic, some skin can be retained), and cut into small cubes or thin slices. Note: Smaller pieces release juice more easily.

  2. Place the radish pieces in a clean, dry, oil-free glass jar. Layer radish and honey, or pour 30-50g of honey directly over the radish, ensuring the honey mostly covers the radish.

  3. Cover and marinate at room temperature for 2-4 hours, or refrigerate overnight. During marinating, the radish releases water and blends with the honey to form juice.

TCM Notes

White Radish (Daikon): Contains approximately 16-20 kcal per 100g, with over 94% water content. Rich in vitamin C (about 20-30mg/100g), dietary fiber, glucosinolates, amylase, lignin, and minerals including potassium and calcium. Known for descending qi, aiding digestion, resolving phlegm, moistening the lungs, detoxifying, generating fluids, promoting diuresis, and relieving constipation. Glucosinolates produce isothiocyanates after enzymatic hydrolysis, which have antibacterial and digestive-promoting effects; amylase aids starch digestion; dietary fiber promotes intestinal motility. Honey: Mainly contains fructose and glucose (about 70%-80%), various enzymes, organic acids, vitamins, and minerals. Known for tonifying the middle, moistening dryness, relieving pain, and detoxifying. The fructose and glucose provide quick energy, enzymes aid digestion, and its viscous texture forms a protective layer on the throat mucosa, relieving dry cough irritation. Synergistic Effect: White radish descends qi, resolves phlegm, clears heat, and generates fluids; honey moistens the lungs, relieves cough, tonifies the middle, and moistens dryness. One clears, one moistens—resolving phlegm without damaging fluids, and moistening the lungs without causing stagnation. Total approx. 120-180 kcal (depending on honey amount)—a low-fat, lung-moistening, phlegm-resolving dietary drink.

Suitable for:Those with lung dryness, dry cough with little phlegm, dry throat, and itchy throat Those with phlegm-heat cough, yellow thick phlegm, and difficult expectoration Those with throat discomfort and hoarseness during dry autumn and winter Those with indigestion, food stagnation, abdominal bloating, and constipation Those with dry throat after smoking or drinking alcohol General population for autumn-winter dryness relief and daily wellness

Not suitable for:Infants under 1 year old – absolutely no honey – honey may contain Clostridium botulinum spores, and infants under 1 year have an immature gut microbiome, which can lead to infant botulism. This is the most important contraindication. Diabetes patients – use with caution or avoid. Honey is high in sugar and raises blood glucose quickly; strictly control intake or consult a doctor for sugar substitutes. Those with Spleen-Stomach Cold Deficiency or prone to diarrhea – use with caution. White radish is cool in nature, especially raw; those with cold intolerance, diarrhea, or abdominal cold pain may worsen symptoms. Cook it and add 2-3 slices of ginger to balance the cool nature. Those with wind-cold cough – use with caution. Wind-cold cough (white thin phlegm, chills, clear runny nose) is not suitable for this formula alone; white radish is cool and may worsen cold cough. Those taking qi-tonifying herbs such as ginseng or astragalus – avoid concurrent use. Traditionally, white radish is believed to “descend qi,” which may weaken the effects of qi-tonifying herbs. Those with thyroid disorders – white radish contains glucosinolates, which may affect iodine absorption. Those with abnormal thyroid function should consume in moderation and avoid long-term heavy consumption. Those with gastric ulcers or hyperacidity – use with caution. White radish may stimulate gastric acid secretion, and honey may also promote acid; try small amounts. Those allergic to white radish or honey – avoid.
